Academic and Professional Staff

Randy Heiland

Randy Heiland • Research Associate • Intelligent Systems Engineering

Education

Short bio and research interests

Mr. Heiland enjoys making contributions to science via software engineering, data analysis/visualization, and EOT (education, outreach, and training). He spent his early life in Illinois and worked in industry as a computer programmer after college. Graduate school drew him to Utah where he focused on computer graphics and computer-aided geometric design. After Utah, he spent two wonderful years living and working overseas (Oslo) as a software developer at (what became) SINTEF. Following some extended travel through Southeast Asia, he entered graduate school again to study computer science and mathematics at Arizona State University, and ended up focusing on dynamical systems. Since then he's had the pleasure of working at LANL, PNNL, NCSA, and Indiana University. In the Macklin lab, Mr. Heiland leads development of PhysiCell and related technologies while applying them to critical projects in cancer and multicellular systems engineering. Randy enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, reading, and taking their dog on long walks.

John Metzcar • Ph.D. student • Intelligent Systems Engineering

Education

Short bio and research interests

John Metzcar is a Ph.D. student in the Intelligent Systems Engineering department of IU-Bloomington with a varied background in radiation oncology physics, winemaking, beverage manufacturing, and chemical engineering. His research interests include understanding, modeling, simulating, and eventually enacting points of control in the interaction between primary and metastatic breast tumors and their microenvironments. His current approach is to gain understanding of the combined dynamics of tumor growth, hypoxia, angiogenesis, tumor seeding, and tumor networking through biologically-driven computational modeling.
